Discover Tintagel

Steeped in history, and with some of the most dramatic far-reaching coastal views in North Cornwall, Tintagel is a special place that has inspired many artists and writers throughout history.

An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the views around Tintagel are not only picture-perfect but the village is also steeped in myths and legends with King Arthur being one of the most notorious.

You can explore the English Heritage site of the blackened ruins that is Tintagel Castle, said to be the birthplace of King Arthur himself and with a history dating as far back as the Roman era. Situated on an island, the dramatic clifftop settlement broods over the North Cornish coastline. Below the castle are tunnels and caves said to be the home of Merlin, and, as legend has it, he still walks there and sometimes his voice can even be heard among the rocks and waves.

In the middle of Tintagel village sits the characterful Old Post Office, originally a 14th-century yeoman’s farmhouse with a famously curvy slate roof. Now owned by the National Trust, the exhibition inside, and the cottage garden at the back, offers a wealth of insight into how people lived in days gone by.

When you’ve worked up an appetite, there are some great spots for a traditional Cornish cream tea (jam first, remember!). As well as filling up on scones you have the choice of some lovely cafes, ‘proper’ Cornish pasty outlets and welcoming pubs to enjoy a pint of gorgeous Cornish ale.

If you need to work off that cream tea with a bracing walk, Tintagel is conveniently located on the coastal footpath. With glorious scenery as far as the eye can see, the views will take your breath away (literally, some parts are not for the faint-hearted)!

Just a short drive (or a dramatic walk) away you can get to coves and beaches such as Bossiney and Trebarwith, the latter being slightly more popular with visitors due to the amenities on hand and a popular clifftop pub, The Port William. Trebarwith is a renowned surfing spot with seasonal lifeguard cover.
